I heard my first joik and I was hooked; I had to learn more about the Sámi peoples and their art forms.

Like many Americans, my Sámi heritage is dubious; the only “proof” I have is the words of my great-grandmother. But when I heard my first joik, there was something that resonated deep within me. I had to learn more.

I ended up joining the Pacific Sámi Searvi and serving on its board for three years. I know I still have a lot to learn.
